Job Description:

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility. The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the "glue" that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider. It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions. Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

BNL has an immediate opening for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join the efforts to design and build BNL's new Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). In this role, you will have opportunities to work with a team of engineers and scientists on a wide range of mechanical components, systems, and equipment. This will include items such as large and small static and dynamic structures, lifting and positioning fixtures, high voltage and high current magnetic and electrostatic devices, Radio Frequency (RF) accelerator cavities and components, vacuum components, cryogenic components, and water/air cooled systems.

Join BNL at the beginning of this ground-breaking scientific and engineering project and become part of the team building this scientific discovery machine ( bnl.gov/eic ).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop mechanical components and systems from initial concept through final design.
Perform engineering analysis using FEA and hand calculations for design validation.
Prepare component Specifications and Statement of Work (SOW) for procurement.
Oversee component procurement, fabrication, assembly, testing and installation.
Manage engineering projects, and develop project plans including schedules, needed resources, and budgets.
Prepare design reviews and presentations.
Work independently and collaboratively with scientific, engineering, and technical staff.
Provide engineering advice and direction in areas of expertise.
May oversee and coordinate a variety of technical staff for design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and installation of equipment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field
At least three (3) years' experience in the design of mechanical equipment and component systems.
Experience with creative engineering projects, working hands-on with mechanical equipment, and collaborating with a team to develop and build unique equipment.
Demonstrated ability with 3D Computer Aided Design modeling software.
Ability to perform mechanical engineering design and analysis/calculation functions
Experience with ANSYS or equivalent thermal and stress engineering FEA software.
Experience with generating engineering analysis reports.
Knowledge of material properties, manufacturing/machine shop processes, welding, hardware & component choice, manufacturing, installation, and dimensioning and tolerances
Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills

About Brookhaven National Laboratory

Established in 1947 on Long Island, Upton, New York, Brookhaven is a multi-program national laboratory operated by Brookhaven Science Associates for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Six Nobel Prizes have been awarded for discoveries made at the Lab. Brookhaven has a staff of approximately 2,600 scientists, engineers, technicians and support staff and over 4,000 guest researchers annually. Brookhaven National Laboratory's role for the DOE is to produce excellent science and advanced technology with the cooperation, support, and appropriate involvement of our scientific and local communities. The fundamental elements of the Laboratory's role in support of the four DOE strategic missions are the following: • To conceive, design, construct, and operate complex, leading edge, user-oriented facilities in response to the needs of the DOE and the international community of users. • To carry out basic and applied research in long-term, high-risk programs at the frontier of science. • To develop advanced technologies that address national needs and to transfer them to other organizations and to the commercial sector. • To disseminate technical knowledge, to educate new generations of scientists and engineers, to maintain technical capabilities in the nation's workforce, and to encourage scientific awareness in the general public.
