Location:

Upton , NY

Job Description:

The national cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) center, the Laboratory for BioMolecular Structure (LBMS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory, provides sample preparation, screening, and high-resolution data collection for both single-particle cryo-EM and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) studies.

To expand LBMS's cryo-ET capabilities, we are establishing a cryo-focused ion beam (cryo-FIB) platform to prepare thin lamellae of cells/tissues. In combination with cryo-ET, biological interactions in cellular environment and the organization/morphology of living cells can be visualized.

The LBMS is seeking an experienced scientist to join our team and support our efforts in expanding cryo-ET capabilities. The successful candidate will have a strong background in biology, biochemistry, and experience with cryo-ET techniques.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Use cryo-focused ion beam (cryo-FIB) to prepare thin lamellae for cryo-ET.
Use cryo-ultramicrotome to prepare thin sections of tissues for cryo-ET.
Use high-pressure freezer to prepare thick samples.
Collect cryo-ET data and perform data analysis.
Support the operation of LBMS.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor's and 2+ years, or Master's and 1+ year in the field of cell biology, plant biology, structure biology, immunology, biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry, cell biology, plant genetics, microbiology, virology, or a related field.
Proven abilities for dissemination of research through publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Ability to communicate effectively and constructively.
Ability to work with flexible scheduling.
Self-motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor's and 5+ years, or Master's and 3+ years, or Doctorate.
Experience in use of a cryo-focused ion beam (cryo-FIB) for milling biological samples.
Experience in use of a ultramicrotomes to cut biological tissues.
Experience in use of high-pressure freezer to freeze thick samples for cryo-FIB or ultramicrotome.
Experience in use of SEM and fluorescence microscopy.
Experience in cryo-ET technique including sample preparation, data collection and analysis.

About Brookhaven National Laboratory

Established in 1947 on Long Island, Upton, New York, Brookhaven is a multi-program national laboratory operated by Brookhaven Science Associates for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Six Nobel Prizes have been awarded for discoveries made at the Lab. Brookhaven has a staff of approximately 2,600 scientists, engineers, technicians and support staff and over 4,000 guest researchers annually. Brookhaven National Laboratory's role for the DOE is to produce excellent science and advanced technology with the cooperation, support, and appropriate involvement of our scientific and local communities. The fundamental elements of the Laboratory's role in support of the four DOE strategic missions are the following: • To conceive, design, construct, and operate complex, leading edge, user-oriented facilities in response to the needs of the DOE and the international community of users. • To carry out basic and applied research in long-term, high-risk programs at the frontier of science. • To develop advanced technologies that address national needs and to transfer them to other organizations and to the commercial sector. • To disseminate technical knowledge, to educate new generations of scientists and engineers, to maintain technical capabilities in the nation's workforce, and to encourage scientific awareness in the general public.
