SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory's Business Services Division (BSD) has an exciting opportunity for a financial analyst. Reporting to the Senior Finance Manager for Mission Support in the Office of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO), you will have the opportunity to apply a variety of skills ranging from providing financial analysis related to the preparation of proposals and budgets, approving and monitoring expenses, analyzing and translating financial results into accurate forecast and business drivers, evaluating controls and compliance with government accounting requirements, and supporting improvement of OCFO processes. You will also provide management decision support using PeopleSoft, Workday Adaptive, MicroStrategy, SQL, and Excel-based tools.

This position is expected to maintain an effective and engaged working relationship across all finance functions at SLAC (peers within and outside of the team, business managers, finance managers, cost account managers (CAMs), Principal Investigators, directorate management, Controller's Office, Budget Office, Human Resources). The ideal candidate is skilled in balancing customer service and support with controls and compliance.

Your specific responsibilities include:
Perform complex finance and/or accounting functions and/or activities requiring advanced knowledge and application of internal policies, external regulations, precedents, and systems. Complete work independently, and manage a key area within a finance operation, as needed. Construct and assemble data for budgeting, forecasting, and decision making; develop conclusions, and present high-level summary of recommendations. Serve as a business decision resource partner on matters that require financial expertise. Collaborate with principal investigator(s) in the preparation and financial reporting of proposals within parameters of sponsored and non-sponsored research guidelines. Work under minimal supervision to manage the proposal preparation and/or post award activities on grants, contracts, program projects, and federal grants, both routine and complex. Review and approve expenditures, advise on post award spending and commitment activity, and oversee compliance related to fund and revenue. Design and perform ad hoc analyses; develop and maintain complex data models, perform sensitivity analysis, analyze large complex data sets, and reconcile complex accounts. Identify and resolve complex issues which may span multiple areas; apply ingenuity and creativity to problem analysis and resolution and recognize exceptions. Conduct analysis and resolution and recognize exceptions. Participate in developing solutions that may require policy changes or the development of new processes; maintain broader organizational perspective in decision making. Execute internal control programs established by management, research new regulations, and recommend and implement approved changes. Participate as a member of a project team; support new initiatives; cooperate and adapt to changes and processes. Contribute and communicate to unit and organization strategy; assist in the development of change management plans, web content, and provide support for course delivery and materials update, as needed. Develop and maintain desktop procedures and process documentation for area of responsibility. Participate in critical analysis of existing systems and processes and identify opportunities for process improvement. Perform system testing and analyze results. Provide consulting advice to client group(s); serve as a resource on matters that require specific technical, financial, or subject matter expertise; support negotiations with external partners. May train, coach, and review the work of other staff, as needed. Contribute primarily through applying individual expertise. To be successful in this position you will bring:
Bachelor's degree and four years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Ability to prioritize competing deliverables. Advanced proficiency in business applications, such as Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel. Demonstrated knowledge of financial systems, internet, and computer literacy. Keen attention to detail. Knowledge of GAAP. Strong communication skills, including ability to prepare materials for and clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences and client groups. Demonstrated project management skills and ability to contribute to or lead part of a multi-functional team. It is highly desired that the successful candidate will be a self-starter who is comfortable with ambiguity, managing large data sets, and working in a matrix organization. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

SLAC studies of exotic materials with quirky traits could have a profound impact on society, although it may be far in the future. Meanwhile, scientists use our X-ray beams for experiments to improve materials for computer chips, jet planes, refinery operations and “smart windows” that automatically adjust the amount of light coming in, to name a few.Even the accelerator technology developed for basic physics experiments has had a huge impact in medicine and industry, where it shrinks tumors, sterilizes medical supplies and hardens materials, among many other things. SLAC researchers are working to make accelerators much smaller and cheaper so they can accomplish even more. Solving Energy Challenges Many threads of SLAC research come together in the quest for clean, sustainable energy sources. We study how plants make energy from sunlight with an eye to doing the same, and customize chemical reactions for generating clean fuels. Our specialized X-ray equipment allows scientists to watch batteries, solar cells and fuel cells in operation, a crucial step in improving how they work. An Eye on the Cosmos SLAC started more than 50 years ago as a place to discover fundamental particles and forces. Today, our researchers still explore the universe at the largest and smallest scales. At the tiniest scale, we help search for new particles and forces at the Large Hadron Collider in Europe, where the Higgs boson was discovered. At the most sweeping scale, we’re building the world’s biggest digital camera for the widest, deepest survey of the night sky ever undertaken.
