NorfolkNaval Shipyard (NNSY) is seeking skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanics to help keepthe U.S. Navy's ships, submarines, buildings, and other structures strong andsound. NNSY is home to approximately 12,000 military and civilian personnel, inPortsmouth, Virginia on 1,275 acres and is one of the oldest and mostmulti-faceted shipyards in the country. JOB SUMMARY

The NNSY Heavy Equipment Mechanic determines the causes ofmechanical problems that occur on a variety of trucks, heavy construction andspecial purpose vehicles that have hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical utilitysystems, controls and other features not commonly found on typical automobiles,and other transport vehicles. The incumbent identifies the mechanical problem,then plans and performs the appropriate repairs that may include overhauling orrebuilding and any other major repairs. Minor and major work repairs will beperformed on a variety of equipment systems ranging from diesel, gasoline, andother types of internal combustion engines, automatic and non-automatictransmissions, heavy duty drive line systems and hydraulic utility systems andcontrols. Repairs and modifications are performed in accordance with specificationsand guidelines ensuring proper operation of the complete system or vehicle.Repairs may include replacing parts such as injection valves, cylinder heads,pistons rings, gears, gaskets, and crank shafts.

The incumbent is required to drive various typesof government vehicles and operate various types of government equipment formaintenance purposes.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Incumbent receives instructions from the HeavyEquipment Mechanic Foreman, either orally or in writing as to the work to beperformed.
Incumbent determines ways to mechanically andphysically adapt or alter items to fit systems and vehicles for which the itemswere not specifically designed and finds ways to correct defects when existingmethods and procedures do not give desired results.
May be assigned helpers or apprentices to assistin completing assignments.


Requirements
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of the mechanical makeup,operation, and working relationships of a variety of heavy duty systems,assemblies, parts of diesel, multifuel, and gasoline engines that includeautomatic and non-automatic transmissions and gear reduction systems, driveline assemblies, hydraulic lifting, loading, turning, positioning systemsincluding their mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic controls.
Skills from previous experience using tools andmeasuring devices to include torque wrenches (foot and inch/pound types),calipers, inside and outside dividers, rulers, scales, thickness gauges, insideand outside micrometers and dial indicators.
The incumbent is required to drive various typesof government vehicles and operate various types of government equipment formaintenance purposes.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

A high school diploma or General Educational Development Diploma (GED) isrequired.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over.
Heavy carrying, 45 pounds and over.
Straight pulling, pulling hand over hand, pushing, reaching above shoulders, use of fingers, both hands are required, walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, repeated bending, climbing, use of legs and arms, both legs are required.
Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4.
Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other.
Ability to distinguish basic colors.
Hearing (aid permitted).
Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
Incumbent works both inside and outside, in confined spaces, on the waterfront and in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, excessive dampness or chilling.
Incumbent may be exposed to excessive and intermittent noise as well as smoke, or gases, solvents (degreasing agents), grease and oils.
May be assigned to work areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present. They may include but are not limited to dust, fumes, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation chemicals.
Slippery and/or uneven walking surfaces, working around machinery with moving parts, working around moving objects or vehicles, working on ladders or scaffolding, working below ground, working closely with others, and working alone.
Incumbent will be required to wear a respirator and must be respirator qualified to work in areas where respirators are required.
Operation of crane, truck, tractor, or motor vehicle.
Toensure employee safety and health, the shipyard maintains personnel protectionprograms consistent with applicable laws and regulations. These programs mayinclude engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personalprotective equipment and medical surveillance. As part of medical surveillanceprograms, the incumbent may be required to take a medical examination.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a US citizen.
Must have a High SchoolDiploma or General Educational Development Diploma (GED).
Must have or be able to obtain and maintain aSecret Security Clearance based on a Single Scope Background Investigationwhich includes credit, criminal, and motor vehicle reports.
Must be able to drive various types ofgovernment vehicles and operate various types of government equipment formaintenance purposes. A valid state motor vehicle operator's license isrequired and must be maintained.
Must be able to work assigned projects and shifts.
