Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) is seeking hands on skilledRiggers to keep the U.S. Navy's ships, submarines, buildings, and otherstructures strong and sound. NNSY is home to approximately 12,000 military andcivilian personnel, located in Portsmouth, Virginia on 1,275 acres and is oneof the oldest and most multi-faceted shipyards in the country. JOB SUMMARY
The incumbent will work primarily at the Norfolk NavalShipyard (NNSY) in Portsmouth, Virginia but may be assigned to other dutystations throughout the east coast including Charleston, SC, Kings Bay, GA, andSaratoga Springs, NY.
Riggers at NNSY will perform a full range of rigging dutiestypical of a WG-10 level rigger. Riggers move large, heavy objects in open and confinedspaces considering the objects shape, size, and location as well as thestrength of the overhead support structures. The incumbent plans, lays-out,assembles, repairs, and installs complex weight handling gear and variousstanding and running rigging. Successful candidates must be familiar with andhave experience using chain falls, cranes and other rigging equipment or a combinationof these. Some of the objects moved include ship's engines, generators,turbines, pumps, boilers, structural shapes and plates, nuclear components anddelicate electronics equipment such as sonar gear.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for the movement of portal andmobile cranes and derricks.
Provides the operator with the correct weight ofthe load to be lifted.
Ensures that the crane hooks/swivels have alocking device or are moused.
Ensures that all bells on cranes areoperational, tracks are clear before moving, and the tower and boom are clearbefore rotating or traveling the crane.
Ensures derrick is properly secured (tied toship or pier) prior to use.
Responsible for the proper selection, attachmentand safe use of all rigging gear and equipment including crane boom and ensuringcounterweight clearances.
Responsible for properly wearing all PPE and safetygear and adhering to all safety regulations, as well as observing all shoprules, regulations and policies, ensuring good housekeeping practices and asafe work environment.
Responsible for instructing apprentice helpers,rigger workers and/or riggers in proper techniques or procedures for performingrigging work.
Ensures adequate shift turnover of job status,materials, plans and procedures.
Performs other related duties as assigned andworks without close supervision while taking direction from a Rigger Leader orRigger Supervisor when necessary.
May be required to be a qualified signalman.
Requirements
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
Thorough working knowledge of rigging principles and techniques.
Ability to read, interpret and understand specifications, procedures, diagrams and sketches.
Experience and knowledge using complex multipoint suspension techniques to permit maneuvering over and around obstacles by tilting, dipping, and turning the suspended load with consideration to the safety of personnel and of the equipment.
All assigned work must be performed in accordance with applicable technical work documents.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Candidates are required to have qualifications in the skills and processes required for a formal rigger trade including basic non-nuclear generic course qualifications that must be maintained. This is typically acquired through the completion of a 4-year apprenticeship in the rigger trade.
Must possess and maintain a working knowledge of submarines and/or surface ship systems, components, compartments, and tanks.
The incumbent may be required to enter into the radiological and nuclear work program. In this case, radiological and nuclear work practices and procedures training will be provided. These qualifications are required and must be maintained to perform this work.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Heavy physical exertion is required at frequent intervals requiring the ability to lift and/or carry 45 pounds and over.
Normal hearing and normal vision in both eyes are required. The ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors may also be required.
Must have the physical capacity to work in all types of weather and conditions both inside and outside in areas with excessive and/or constant intermittent noise, in confined spaces and on slippery or uneven surfaces at or in transit to or from worksites.
Must correctly wear safety and protective clothing and apparatus' prescribed for the work setting .
Must work from ladders and platforms, in awkward and uncomfortable positions and enter accesses 18 inches in diameter.
Possible exposure to potentially harmful physical and chemical agents that may include, but are not limited to: silica, asbestos, fumes, dust, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, etc.
May direct cranes and operate hoists, forklifts and/or hand trucks to handle heavier material and equipment.
Use of fingers, both hands, pushing, pulling, reaching above shoulders, both legs for walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, bending, the use of both arms and legs for climbing, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
Must be able to travel between 1 and 6 months out of a calendar year.
To ensure employee safety and health, the shipyard maintains personnel protection programs consistent with applicable laws and regulations. These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personal protective equipment and medical surveillance. As part of medical surveillance programs, the incumbent may be required to take a medical examination.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be a US citizen.
Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance based on a Single Scope Background Investigation which includes credit, criminal, and motor vehicle reports.
Must be able to work assigned projects and shifts.
