Job Description
Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) is seeking highly skilled, enthusiastic machinists to keep the U.S. Navy’s ships, submarines, buildings, and other structures and equipment strong and sound. NNSY is home to approximately 11,000 Military and Civilian personnel, located in Portsmouth, Virginia on 1,275 acres and is one of the oldest and most multi-faceted shipyards in the country.

JOB SUMMARY
As a machinist at NNSY, you will manufacture, modify, repair, or rebuild mechanical parts and assemblies from metals, alloys, rubber, plastics, and other materials using conventional and computer numerical control (CNC) machines.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Set up and operate both conventional and computer numerical control machines
Independently determine the work procedures, tools and proper sequence of operation and ensure completed work is checked for conformance to specifications
Coordinate support with other work sections and trades as determined to accomplish assigned tasks
Perform work in various locations including shipboard and inside shop
Provide technical assistance to lower-grade machinists
Performs other related duties as assigned

Requirements

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

A thorough understanding of mechanical components and the operating theory of various types of mechanical equipment
Prior knowledge and skill in setting up and operating multiple types of machine tools and making manual inputs and adjustments to ensure accurate dimensional tolerances of produced parts
Proficiency in the use of measuring devices and precision instruments including calipers, micrometers, gauges, etc. used in the industry to ensure a quality product that meets tolerance ranges
Knowledge of metals, metal alloys, rubber, plastics, etc. necessary to achieve the desired finishes
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, work orders, etc. to determine appropriate tools necessary to configure the parts to be made
Extensive knowledge in mathematics for troubleshooting and identifying problems and necessary repairs
Ability to successfully complete and maintain certifications in related training

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Candidates must have completed a four-year apprenticeship program in the machinist trade or have had at least four years of directly related experience in the trade that is equivalent of a completed apprenticeship

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to perform physical exertion, lifting and carrying 45 pounds and over
Use of hand and power tools and knowledge and experience operating equipment such as cranes, hoists, forklifts, and/or hand trucks to handle heavier materials, tractors, or motor vehicles
Use of fingers, both hands, pushing, pulling, reaching above shoulders, stooping, twisting, both legs for walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, bending, the use of both arms and legs for climbing, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously
Normal hearing ability; the use of aid(s) acceptable
Normal vision in both eyes and the ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors
Ability to work in all types of weather conditions both inside and outside in excessive heat, humidity, dampness, or chilling conditions, in areas with excessive and/or constant intermittent noise
Ability to work from test and machine platforms and/or in awkward and uncomfortable positions and in confined spaces
Working in conditions at and to and from work sites that may include slippery or uneven surfaces
Exposure to hazards in the workplace including, but not limited to operating or working near machinery with moving parts, working around electricity, elevations, sharp edges, etc.
Possible exposure to potentially harmful physical and chemical agents
Correct use and wear of PPE (personal protective equipment) including anti-contamination clothing where required and a face to face piece seal air purifying negative pressure non-powered respirator
May be required to take a medical examination

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a US citizen
Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance based on a Single Scope Background Investigation which includes credit, criminal, and a motor vehicle reports
Must be able to work assigned projects and shifts
Occasional travel may be required

Benefits
$23.94/hour
Hiring incentive: Up to $10,000 with 2-year agreement
