These positions are in the Division of Reactor Projects, Region III. If you are selected for one of these positions, you will likely be assigned to the regional office in Lisle, IL pending completion of the inspector training and qualification process. Upon completion of such training, you could be reassigned, without further competition, to a Resident Inspector position at any nuclear power plant/facility in Region III (Upper Midwest).

As a Reactor Engineer/Reactor Inspector you will:

Participate in formal classroom training and other developmental activities to gain certification as an NRC Inspector.
Participate in the assessment of licensee performance of nuclear facilities.
Directly inspect licensee activities during construction, pre-operation and operation phases.
Perform in-depth inspections at assigned plant(s) during start-up, operation and decommissioning to ensure compliance with design specifications, conditions of the construction permit or operating license, etc.
Ensure inspection program completion in accordance with schedules specified in the Inspection Manual or other official documents.
Participate in planning the scope of inspections at assigned plant(s).
Prepare and presents inspection reports describing findings and conclusions regarding the licensee's safety performance and conformance with NRC requirements, operating license provisions, and applicable industry codes and standards.


Geographic mobility is a condition of employment for selection under this announcement. Any applicant selected under this announcement must meet the eligibility requirements as outlined in the NRC Resident Inspector Relocation Bonus Policy, including signing a Mobility Agreement. The Mobility Agreement will be furnished to selectees at the point of job offer and must be signed at the time the offer is accepted. NOTE THAT THE TOUR LENGTH FOR A RESIDENT INSPECTOR AT A SINGLE SITE IS LIMITED TO SEVEN (7) YEARS BY COMMISSION POLICY.

The ideal candidate for this position must demonstrate in their resume:

1. Knowledge of the design features and operating characteristics of nuclear reactor facilities by describing professional experience with reactor facilities, commercial, government, or military. This experience may have been as a power plant operator, in a staff position in operations, or associated with plant operations.

2. Demonstrated experience in applying the theories, principles, and practices of engineering to the design, construction, and/or operation of nuclear power plants by describing substantive experience in applying engineering knowledge to nuclear power plant design, construction, or operation, and/or to inspection of nuclear power plant operations.

3. Professional experience with problem identification and resolution by describing instances where problem-solving and conflict resolution skills were demonstrated to be especially effective. Describe experiences in root cause analysis or investigations of equipment or performance problems, or similar analytical studies of operational events, safety deficiencies, or malfunctions. Describe two or three examples of the most complex or controversial problems resolved and how they were approached.

4. Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both orally and in writing. This includes the ability to establish effective working relationships with supervisors, government and industry officials, utility employees and managers, government committees, co-workers, media personnel, NRC officials and senior managers, as well as the ability to write technical reports containing findings, analyses, and conclusions.

Specialized Experience Required: Applicants must have recent experience associated with nuclear power plant operations, maintenance, and testing that demonstrates knowledge of basic nuclear technology, operating safety procedures, radiological safety, codes, standards and procedures. This ability must have been gained through commercial, government, or military nuclear experience.


To qualify for these positions, you must meet BOTH basic education/professional knowledge requirements that apply to Federal engineering positions at all grade levels AND the specialized experience requirements outlined above.

Regardless of the grade level of the vacancy, candidates for Federal Government professional engineering positions must meet certain basic professional knowledge requirements. Generally these knowledge requirements are met by having a bachelor's or higher degree in a relevant professional engineering discipline (e.g., nuclear, electrical, mechanical, metallurgical, structural, chemical) from a school of engineering with at least one professional engineering curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

NOTE: It is your responsibility to furnish documentation that you meet the education and professional knowledge requirements. In the absence of such documentation, you will be rated not qualified.
In addition to the basic education/knowledge requirements described above, you must possess at least 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GG-09).
To meet the basic level of experience for the GG-11 level, you will need 3 years of post bachelor's degree experience or at least 1 year of post master's degree professional engineering experience where you have applied professional engineering disciplines (e.g., nuclear, electrical, mechanical, metallurgical, structural, chemical).
To meet the basic level of experience for the GG-12 level, you will need 4 years of post bachelor's degree experience or at least 2 years of post master's degree professional engineering experience where you have applied relevant professional engineering disciplines as identified above.
To meet the basic level of experience for the GG-13 level, you will need 5+ years of post bachelor's degree experience or at least 3+ years of post master's degree professional engineering experience where you applied relevant professional engineering disciplines as identified above.
