Job Description
Eastern State Hospital, located in Williamsburg, Virginia, was founded in 1773, with a well-intentional emphasis on community focused mental health care. This state of the art campus, situated on 500 acres, consists of two patient care buildings with 300 patients, and a highly skilled staff of over 900. Eastern State Hospital is part of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services ( DBHDS ) system, and is accredited by the Joint Commission.
ESH invites applications for the position of Psychiatric Technician. The Psychiatric Technician is responsible for the provision of direct care to mentally ill patients in an assigned unit.
The Direct Service Associate II (Psychiatric Technician) is directly responsible to the LPN , RN I, RN II, RN Mgr. I, or HGTC Administrator for the provision of direct care to mentally ill patients in an assigned unit, according to the philosophy and objectives of Eastern State Hospital's Department of Nursing and the Hospital's mission, goals and objectives to continuously pursue the highest quality services that empower individuals in their recovery and partner with those we serve to promote personal independence.

Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing
• Ability to provide therapeutic de-escalation in a safe manner.
• Ability to function with minimum supervision, recognizing the need for direction and assistance in situations beyond his/her scope of capabilities.
• Ability to learn and participate as a team member.
• Must successfully complete BLS , TOVA and other required training upon employment at Eastern State Hospital.
• Must successfully complete and maintain competencies.
• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Valid Driver's license required.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to assist patient's with ADLs preferred.
Completion of nurse aide, psychiatric aide, or geriatric aide training program preferred.
Considerable experience in direct patient care preferred.
Current enrollment or completion of a degree program in a health or human science, such as psychology, sociology, social work, nursing, pre-nursing, pre-medical, or other major health care major preferred.
Experience working with patients with mental disorders and/or intellectual disabilities preferred.
