Job Description:

This position is with the Office of Information and Technology (OIT), within U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), at the West Region Field Support Directorate located in Yuma, AZ.

If selected, you will use your expertise in information technology principles, concepts, and methods to support information technology systems and services. You will become a key team member of Homeland Security professionals to provide technology service, implement projects and deploy systems to reduce downtime and maintain operational availability.

Typical duties include:

• Diagnosing and resolving problems in response to customer reported incidents.
• Researching, evaluating, and providing feedback on problematic trends and patterns to support customer support requirements.
• Interacting with internal and external stakeholders as the Subject Matter Expert to provide IT guidance and solutions and providing customer training as required.
• Installing, configuring, integrating, troubleshooting, optimizing, and maintaining customer hardware and software to maximize system availability and monitors network performance.
• Ensuring application of information security/information assurance policies, principles, and practices.

Salary and Benefits

This position starts at a salary of $57,118.00 (GS-09, Step 1) to $89,835.00 (GS-11, Step 10) with promotion potential to $107,680.00 (GS-12 Step 10).

Qualifications–This position will be filled at either the GS-9 or GS-11 grade level, as described below and depending upon the qualifications of the applicants.

Note: There is both a basic requirement and an education substitution (see below) for experience allowed for both the GS-9 and GS-11 grade levels.

Basic Requirement: Applicants for BOTH the GS-9 and GS-11 grade levels must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of these four competencies:

• Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
• Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
• Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, considering the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
• Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

In addition to the four competencies listed above you must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience described below to qualify based on experience.

Experience for GS-9: You qualify for the GS-09 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
• Testing, installing, configuring, and maintaining networks including hardware, middleware, and software to ensure conformance to national standards consulting.
• Ensuring security assurance policies and principles are adhered to.
• Developing and administering local databases.

Experience for GS-11: You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
• Analyzing, planning, integrating, and configuring network systems hardware
• Diagnosing and resolving network problems, hardware/software interface and interoperability problems
• Testing, installing, configuring and maintaining networks including hardware, middleware and software to ensure conformance to national standards consulting
• Evaluating new hardware and software technologies for potential inclusion into the enterprise

Education Substitution: GS-09: Successful completion of a master's or equivalent graduate degree, or two (2) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in an accredited college or university, may be substituted for experience at the GS-09 grade level. Such education must demonstrate the skills needed to do the work. For this position a degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management.

Education Substitution: GS-11: Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three (3) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in an accredited college or university, may be substituted for experience at the GS-11 grade level. Such education must demonstrate the skills needed to do the work. See degree programs listed above.
