Job Description:

Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) is seeking highly skilledand experienced welders to keep the U.S. Navy's ships, submarines, buildings, andother structures strong and sound. NNSY is home to approximately 11,000 military and civilian personnel, locatedin Portsmouth, Virginia on 1,275 acres and is one of the oldest and most multi-faceted shipyards in the country.

JOB SUMMARY

As a welder at NNSY, you will maintain America's navalfleet by modernizing, overhauling, and repairing ships and submarines. Your skills will be used to perform the more difficult,methodical, and meticulous welds on machinery, tools, and jigs in themaintenance of buildings and other structures, public utilities, transportationand construction equipment.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Work independently or under the direction of leadershipto complete assigned tasks
Perform work in various locations including shipboard and inside shopDetermine optimum work plan, tools and materials neededbased on instructions and specifications to meet inspection requirements
Plan details of work order procedures by interpretingsketches, drawings, weld repair procedures, industrial process instructions andwork orders
Monitor pressure vessels and other equipment controls fornecessary adjustment to ensure efficiency
Inspect welds to ensure all standard specificationrequirements are met
Perform other related duties as assigned


Requirements
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

Extensive practical knowledge of welding procedures and ahigh degree of skill when welding piping systems and pressure vessels that mustwithstand pressures of up to 10,000 pounds per square inch and temperatures ashigh as 1400 degrees Fahrenheit. Thisincludes SMAW, GMAW, FCAW and GTAW.
Knowledge and experience using special techniques such asflowing, welding with the aid of mirrors, carbon arcing, etc. while performinghigh pressure weldingKnowledge of various welding equipment and processes thatincludes but is not limited to weld beading techniques, plasma arc cutting,flame cutting, flame heat treating, etc.Knowledge of welding standards and the properties andcharacteristics of metals and alloys and how they react to different weldingprocessesMust maintain the capability to and qualifications forwelding P-1 piping and Class A & B pressure vesselsAbility to use templates in measuring, marking, andscribing and cuttingMay perform HVOF thermal spray coating on both submarineand surface ship machinery components
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Candidates must have completed a four-year apprenticeshipprogram in the welding trade or have had at least four years of directlyrelated experience in the trade that is equivalent of a completedapprenticeship

Ability to set up and weld in close quarters on hard toreach surfaces, in all positions including flat, horizontal, vertical andoverheadAbility to perform physical exertion, lifting andcarrying 45 pounds and overUse of hand and power tools and operate equipment such ascranes, trucks, tractors, or motor vehiclesUse of fingers, both hands, pushing, pulling, reachingabove shoulders, stooping, twisting, both legs for walking, standing, crawling,kneeling, bending, the use of both arms and legs for climbing, ability forrapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneouslyNormal hearing ability; the use of aid(s) acceptableNormal vision in both eyes and the ability to distinguishbasic colors and shadesAbility to work in all types of weather and conditionsboth inside and outside in areas with excessive and/or constant intermittentnoise, in confined spaces and at extreme heightsConditions at and to and from work sites may includeslippery or uneven surfacesPossible exposure to potentially harmful chemical agentsCorrect use and wear of all personal protective equipment (PPE)including anti-contamination clothing where required
