Job Description
Eastern State Hospital, located in Williamsburg, Virginia, was founded in 1773, with a well-intentional emphasis on community focused mental health care. This state of the art campus, situated on 500 acres, consists of two patient care buildings with 300 patients, and a highly skilled staff of over 900. Eastern State Hospital is part of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services ( DBHDS ) system, and is accredited by the Joint Commission.
ESH invites applications for the Food Service Technician I Cook.
This position prepares attractive and nutritional meals according to standardized recipes within specified time constraints. This position uses the cook-chill method of food preparation and storage. Ensures that the proper safety and sanitation standards are met. Follow rules and regulations of the department and the hospital. Ensures that proper safety and sanitation standards are met at all times. Assures that the proper number and size of portions are prepared. Assists and trains and may supervise the activities of new employees at the request of the section manager or Food Service Manager. Actively supports agency SWaM Procurement goals and Executive Order 20 (2014); and where possible promotes SWaM through agency outreach events. Supports the intent of the EO20 and the goals of the Agency SWaM Plan.

This position is considered essential personnel and would be required to work in the event of an emergency, pandemic, or facility need. All ESH positions are required to work different shifts to include nights, weekends and holidays, and/or overtime.
Minimum Qualifications
• Experience in reading and understanding standardized recipes.
• Experience in preparing meals in an orderly and timely manner.
• Experience maintaining a high degree of sanitation in the work area including equipment used.
• Knowledge of safety regulations.
• Experience in preparation of large quantity cooking.
• Experience in working in the operation of industrial/heavy duty food processing equipment.
• Ability to work as a "roundsman" in reference to cooking skills and knowledge as well as commercial baking skills.
• Experience in providing training to new employees.
• Ability to lift heavy objects; bending and stooping; prolonged standing and walking on various surfaces (i.e. concrete, tile, grass, dirt, etc.).
• Work in various environmental conditions (extreme humidity, heat or cold).
• Ability to lift routinely 50 pounds or 25% of body weight (whichever is less).
• Ability to work overtime as required and act in the capacity of essential personnel during emergency/crisis situations.
• High School graduate or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
• Knowledge of special diet food preparation.
• Experience in a hospital Food Service Department.
• Experience in supervision.
