Job Description
This is a grant funded restricted position.   

 
Eastern State Hospital, located in Williamsburg, Virginia, was founded in 1773, with a well-intentional emphasis on community focused mental health care. This state of the art campus, situated on 500 acres, consists of two patient care buildings with 300 patients, and a highly skilled staff of over 900. Eastern State Hospital is part of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services ( DBHDS ) system, and is accredited by the Joint Commission.

 
  ESH invites applications for the position of Assistant Infection Control Registered Nurse  

 
This position will work primarily day shift with some overlap on testing days to 2nd shift as needed to ensure that weekly COVID testing is completed for non-vaccinated staff.    

This is a temporary grant funded position with funding expected through June 2023.  

This position is responsible for coordinating all activities related to the required Covid-19 weekly testing, tracking, and reporting of facility staff test results. Assists the Infection Control Department as directed by the Infection Control Nurse ( ICN ). Assists in the development of systems that support preventing/decreasing the occurrences of healthcare associated infections to patients, visitors, and staff. Assists in the identification and reduction of risks of endemic and epidemic healthcare associated infections to patients, staff, and visitors.  Assists in the coordination of activities related to the surveillance, prevention, and control of healthcare associated infection.  
 
 Conducts weekly required COVID mandated testing on non-vaccinated individuals.  Update VDH web site with testing information.   Tracks and ensures that all non-vaccinated staff are tested weekly.     Follow up with supervisors for staff that are no shows.   Schedules new staff for their weekly test day and time.    Coordinates with the ESH laboratory for any exposure testing needed for staff.      Coordinates with outside lab as needed.      Assists the IC Nurse with ongoing surveillance activities in which the occurrence and potential occurrence of infection among patient and employee populations is identified and control measures implemented and evaluated.    Assists the IC Nurse with the implementation of the Infection Prevention and Control ( IPC ) program so that JCAHO , OSHA standards, VDH and CDC guidelines are met.     Assists with entering infection data monthly for IPC Committee review.  Monitors compliance of employees to the employee health requirements for Covid-19 vaccination/testing, Tuberculin Skin Tests, Hepatitis B Immunization, and Influenza Vaccine, exposures to blood and body fluids, and isolation precautions. Assists with oversight of hand hygiene monitoring program and in the development of creative plans to achieve monitoring and compliance goals, working closely with managers and department heads to achieve compliance targets.  Maintains information concerning patient and employees in a discreet and confidential manner following HIPAA requirements. Completes paperwork as needed and assigned by the ICN . Assists the ICN in arranging or scheduling employee appointments and other appointments as designated. Assists in the maintenance of employee records by accurately filing or assisting with modification of system as needed. Assists in the conducting of TB screening information upon hire and annually and administers PPD or coordinates chest x-rays in accordance with established policies. Assists the IC Nurse in the coordination of employee flu vaccines each year. Assists in maintenance of Hepatitis B Vaccine records and administers vaccines.  Conducts contact screening on exposures in case of an occurrence of tuberculosis or Covid-19 in accordance with established policies and regulations.   Maintains Employee Health Database to ensure staff compliance with required testing. Maintains employee health records in an accurate and timely manner.   Coordinates employee health, surveillance programs. Reviews employee injury reports and coordinates information with Human Resource Department as necessary. Evaluates triage, screens for on the job injury and initiates first aid.  Initiates and maintains confidential health record for employee visits. Assists Human Resource Department with interventions to reduce employee injuries or sick time. 

 
 

 
This position is considered essential personnel and would be required to work in the event of an emergency, pandemic, or facility need. All ESH positions are required to work different shifts to include nights, weekends and holidays, and/or overtime as requested.

Minimum Qualifications
Significant demonstrated knowledge of nursing standards and fundamentals.  Current Virginia license to practice as a Registered Nurse or license eligible; multi-state compact endorsement accepted.   Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.   Skilled in the use of technology, software, and resources to assist and aid in the course of daily health care responsibilities.  Possesses knowledge and skills sufficient to assist the infection control nurse with testing, tracking, training staff, etc.   Ability to handle multiple priorities through time management, organization skills, and delegation. Ability to act in the capacity of essential personnel during emergency/crisis situations.    Ability to work outside of normal business hours to provide IC services.     Associate's Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution of higher education, work experience may substitute education.  Working experience as a Registered Nurse with basic infection control knowledge



Preferred Qualifications
• Previous experience as an infection control or occupational health nurse preferred.  

 
• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution or higher education.
