Eastern State Hospital, located in Williamsburg, Virginia, was founded in 1773, with a well-intentional emphasis on community focused mental health care. This state of the art campus, situated on 500 acres, consists of two patient care buildings with 300 patients, and a highly skilled staff of over 900. Eastern State Hospital is part of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services ( DBHDS ) system, and is accredited by the Joint Commission.

 
ESH invites applications for the position of a Crisis Prevention Response Team in the Nursing Department.  Please note this is not a Security Officer position in Public Safety.

This is a crisis/security position in a mental health facility. This position will maintain security of the resident population and staff at Eastern State Hospital. Maintain constant and positive interaction with patients on the unit by building rapport through therapeutic support and activities. Ensures that unit security presence is maintained on each unit on each shift. Responds to all emergency codes throughout the facility. This position provides safety and security on designated units through efficient and compliant use of TOVA (Therapeutic Options of Virginia) and approved de-escalation techniques in the event of an emergency or code. Assignment will be to one specific unit/units with occasional rotations to other units as needed. This position is responsible for leading the safety culture and initiatives on the unit.

• Responds in a professional and therapeutic manner to various incidents and emergencies.

• Maintain observation of residents on designated units.

• Be familiar with behavioral plans in the implementation of behavior support plans and follow as appropriate.

• Think quickly and independently during emergency situations on the unit involving patients and/or staff.

• Deal with verbally abusive, physically aggressive and provocative behaviors from residents in an appropriate manner.

• Makes routine rounds to ensure the safety and security of residents and staff including but not limited to full unit patient checks.

• Monitors residents during rounding duties.

• Conducts walk- throughs as designated by Administration on the units to help provide a safe and secure environment and milieu for patients and staff.

• Provide training on the unit to staff such as TOVA , de-escalation techniques, code white drills, etc.

• Respond to the scene of any fire, disaster, duress alarm (i.e. codes), or any other such emergency and assist as needed. Check the security of all forensic units.

• Assist with searches on the units as required.

• Consistently interacts and conducts activities with patients to build positive rapport.

• Critical to participate with patients in a genuine humane and professional manner.

• Assist with the implementation of seclusion and restraints as directed by the Nursing Department.

• Properly assists in application of facility approved restraint devices.

Shift Availability: Days (7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.), Evenings (3:00 p.m. - 11:30 p.m.) and Nights (11:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.)

 

 
This position is considered essential personnel and would be required to work in the event of an emergency, pandemic, or facility need. All ESH positions are required to work different shifts to include: nights, weekends, and holidays, and/or overtime as requested.

Minimum Qualifications
• Associate's Degree in law enforcement, corrections, psychology or related field or any equivalent training and experience. 

 
• Valid Virginia Driver's License with acceptable driving record. 

 
• Prior experience working in a field such as law enforcement, military police, corrections or security.

• Prior experience working in mental health.

 
• Experience in handling difficult individuals and be able to follow appropriate approved procedures to physically control, confine, and restrain in difficult situations. 

 
• Ability to act in the capacity of essential personnel during emergency/crisis situations. 

 
• Ability to work different shifts and overtime to cover unit as needed. 

 
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. 

 
• Ability to transport and monitor patients using company vehicle. 

 
• Ability to provide therapeutic de-escalation in a safe manner. 

 
• Skill in implementing behavior modification techniques in a Psychiatric Hospital. 

 
• Skilled in dealing effectively in a Psychiatric Hospital environment working directly with individuals with Mental Health/Psychiatric/Behavior Diagnoses. 

 
• Ability to work in an environment and with individuals with impulsive behaviors, as well as verbal/physical aggression. 

 
• Ability to physically restrain residents as needed during code calls or other emergency situations. 

 
• Skill in providing support on a unit to include intervening with aggressive behaviors. 

 
• Ability to monitor patients and recognize patient escalation and emergency situations. Ability to respond to these situations appropriately. 

 
• Ability to write safety reports using correct grammar, etc. 

 
• Ability to think quickly and independently during emergency situations. Ability to respond quickly to codes. 

 
• Ability to successfully complete BLS , TOVA and other required specialized training upon employment at Eastern State Hospital. 

 
• Ability to successfully complete and maintain assigned annual competencies. 

 
• Ability to work on a quarantined COVID or other pandemic units. 

 
• Ability to provide training and direction on the unit. 

 
• Ability to test and clear screening to wear N95 respirator if required due to quarantined unit. 

 
• Ability to stand and walk for entirety of shift to make rounds (patrol) to ensure unit coverage as well as maintain security presence on the unit.
