Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) is seeking hands-on skilled Electrician Mechanic to keep the U.S. Navy’s ships, submarines, buildings, and other structures strong and sound. NNSY is home to approximately 11,000 military and civilian personnel, located in Portsmouth, Virginia on 1,275 acres and is one of the oldest and most multi-faceted shipyards in the country.

JOB SUMMARY
Electrician Mechanics at NNSY will perform work involved in the installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of electrical control wiring systems, fixtures, mechanical-electromagnetic controls, electro-hydraulic, electropneumatic, and all associated industrial plant equipment.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform job duties with little to no supervision, possessing the ability to select the proper resistive, conductive, and insulating materials for varied applications
Troubleshoot, repair, modify, overhaul, and test industrial equipment, electrical control components and machinery with a strong ability to diagnose and plan repairs accordingly as well as select the appropriate tools, materials, and installation methods to meet all National Electrical Codes and OSHA guidelines
Perform work on various equipment, components and machinery including solid state and electro-hydraulic system components, tachometers, feedback devices, electro-mechanical devices, etc.
Perform work in various locations including shipboard and inside shop
Ensure accuracy of work through continuous test inspections during and after repairs
Perform other related duties as assigned
Provide on-the-job training to apprentices
Responsible for the safety of co-workers in the event of a job-related injury

Requirements

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
Working knowledge of troubleshooting and test procedures for a wide range of complex electrical control systems within the scope of insulating protective equipment (I.P.E.)
Ability to read and interpret blueprints (hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic), wiring diagrams, schematics, work orders and technical manuals and instructions
Thorough knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and the National Fire Protection Association 79 of 1980 and NFPA 70 of 1980
Working knowledge of the various types of complex industrial plant equipment to be worked on
Proficient in the use of test meters and other diagnostic equipment used in the industry
Extensive knowledge of electrical and electronic systems, signs, and color codes
Above average knowledge in mathematics to compute electrical formulas
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Candidates must be a graduate apprentice or equivalent in the Industrial Electronics or Electrical trade

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to work in all types of weather and conditions both inside and outside in areas with excessive and/or constant intermittent noise, from ladders and platforms and in confined spaces and at extreme heights
Conditions at and to and from worksites may include slippery or uneven surfaces
Correct use and wear of personal protective equipment (PPE) including anti-contamination clothing and respirators where required
Possible exposure to potentially harmful physical and chemical agents
Use of hand and power tools and the previous experience in the operation of equipment such as cranes, trucks, tractors, or motor vehicles
Use of fingers, both hands, pushing, pulling, reaching above shoulders, stooping, twisting, both legs for walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, bending, the use of both arms and legs for climbing, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously
Normal hearing ability; the use of aid(s) acceptable
Normal vision in both eyes and the ability to distinguish basic colors

QUALIFICATIONS
Must be a U.S. citizen
Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance based on a Single Scope Background Investigation which includes credit, criminal, and motor vehicle reports
Must be able to work assigned projects and shifts
Occasional travel may be required

$23.94 per hour
Hiring incentive: Up to $10,000 with two-year agreement
