The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department;of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.

Organizational Overview

BNL's Nonproliferation and National Security Department contributes to U.S. nuclear security and safeguards efforts by assisting in the development, analysis and assessment of policies that strengthen international regimes, collecting and analyzing data to identify trends and threats to the U.S. and international communities, developing and implementing new technologies to address existing and emerging threats, and strengthening the domestic and international institutions that form the framework of the nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear security regimes through training and engagement. NN is recruiting a Group Leader to manage and contribute to the work of the Detector Systems R&D and Applications. The Group currently supports offices of the Department of Homeland Security, the National Nuclear Security Administration, and other sponsors on projects aimed at protecting the United States and its allies from internal and external threats. Its scientists and engineers conduct research and provide training for local, regional and national law enforcement agencies on dispersion of radiological material, response to radiological and nuclear incidents, improving chemical security in developing countries, and testing and evaluating radiological instruments for use in monitoring and detection.

Position Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilties:
Manage the Group's staff and budget and address personnel issues such as new hires, raises, promotions and discipline.Approve subcontracts, travel, time cards, and personal leave.Represent the Group and at times, the Department, in internal meetings with BNL senior management, Procurement and Property Management, the Technology Transfer Office, Business Operations, and Research Operations, and externally in meetings with sponsors and collaborators.Act as Principal Investigator on funded projects.Work with organizations across BNL to develop proposals for submission to the Department of Homeland Security, the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Department of Defense, and the intelligence community.Support Department Chair in hosting visitors from US government agencies, other national laboratories, and companies.Provide input to projects in support of the Department of Homeland Security.Mentor early career staff and interns.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
B.S. in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or a related field.Ten (10) years' related work experience in national security, homeland security or related fields to include staff supervision.Ability to secure government sponsorship for diverse research and development programs and achieving goals on schedule and within budget.Ability to build teams, track effort and budgets, and manage projects to completion.Experience in laboratory work, field testing and deployment of radiation detection equipment.Ability to mentor students and early- and mid-career professionals.Knowledge of U.S. government agencies' programs and funding.Demonstrated track record of successful program development.Knowledge of the current state-of-the-art and technology gaps in homeland security.Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" security clearance.Clear and concise communication skills.Ability and availability for foreign and domestic travel
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Advanced degree in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or a related fieldActive DOE 'Q" clearanceExperience as Principal Investigator for US government sponsorsExperience in the supervision of scientists and engineers, including other principal investigators
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

Must be able to pass Radworker training requirements and be willing to work in a radiation environment

OTHER INFORMATION:
The regular workday will be 8:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday, but irregular hours are sometimes required when hosting visitors, conducting training, or traveling. Group Leaders are often expected to participate in extracurricular activities with guests, locally and regionally.
