The Operational Evaluation Division (OED) has an immediate opening for a Research Analyst to support the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in the analysis of the suitability and effectiveness of anti-terrorism products, software, and services. IDA takes great pride in the high caliber and timeliness of its analyses, which are produced in an atmosphere that encourages independent thinking and objective results. Work at IDA is conducted in a team environment and often involves a multi-disciplinary approach.
Research Analysts at IDA are mid-to-senior level research staff positions, responsible for a broad spectrum of analytic functions from defining problems; determining appropriate approaches, selecting modeling or analytical tools to illuminate those problems; guiding junior staff in the application of the selected approaches and tools; interpreting results; and communicating findings (using both written and verbal means). The Research Analyst will work with analysts from throughout IDA, and with subject matter experts from industry, on a diverse set of topics. Some research tasks will be narrowly focused, while others will address a broader spectrum of concerns. All will require an understanding of anti-terrorism, security services, emergency response, or public safety concepts, operations, planning, technologies, and multi-agency coordination challenges. Travel is required.
Candidate must meet one of the following education/experience combinations: A minimum of a Doctoral Degree in Chemistry, Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering (Computer, Chemical, Mechanical, Nuclear, Electrical, or Aerospace), Physics, or Applied Mathematics coupled with relevant work experience (via industry, research fellowships, or internships); OR A minimum of a Master’s Degree in Chemistry (Physical, Theoretical, Nuclear), Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering (Computer, Mechanical, Nuclear, Electrical, or Aerospace), Physics, Applied Mathematics, Public Policy, Homeland Security, Emergency Response, or Operations Research coupled with 10+ years’ industrial, commercial, governmental, or military operational experience Demonstrated ability to identify sources, assemble, and organize data sets for which subsequent quantitative and qualitative analyses is desired.
