The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is a non-profit corporation that operates three federally funded research and development centers. Through these FFRDCs, IDA answers the most challenging U.S. security and space policy questions with objective analyses leveraging extraordinary scientific, technical, and analytic expertise.
This position provides substantive editorial support to the research staff and System Evaluation Division management. Responsibilities include detailed technical editing and writing assistance on unclassified, proprietary, and classified reports, papers, documents, presentation materials, and other publications. This role is essential to supporting IDA’s reputation for providing exceptional written work products to our sponsors.
Edits and formats large and small reports – usually containing text, tables, illustrations, maps, and appendices for clarity, consistency, grammar, and conformity to IDA’s style guidelines and templates. In addition to copyediting, provides substantive technical editing including extensive revisions, rewriting, or original writing as required. Recommends other improvements and advises research staff members on publication organization, format, and style. Works effectively with project managers and authors to resolve content questions, scheduling shifts, and budget constraints. Reviews publication content for compliance with IDA and other prescribed editorial standards to ensure the highest possible quality. Can translate technical jargon into plain language. Provides guidelines on related publication matters such as classification markings, procedures for public release of IDA publications and disseminating released publications. Informs research staff members about the different types of IDA publications and recommends which type is appropriate for their work. Uses division tracking system and IDA publications databases to track status of formal and informal publications as they progress through the publication lifecycle. Schedules and manages production activities from initial draft stage to final publication. Provides training and guidance to administrative and lower level editorial staff on publication and graphic requirements, formatting concerns, and software applications. Participate in peer reviews or in other management-directed document reviews. Orient and advise new staff members on applicable procedures for security markings and publication classification. Performs other duties as assigned, for example, creates brochures or posters.
BA/BS in English, Journalism or a related discipline coupled with 6+ years progressively responsible work experience providing editorial support to a technical group or in a technical work environment. A background and interest in science or engineering would be of considerable value to this position. Experience with a variety of word processing or desktop publishing software, PDF files, web-based applications, and graphics software. Knowledgeable with GPO Style Guide and the Chicago Manual of Style preferred. Excellent written and oral communications skills and ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel.
