Duties
The mission of the Washington State Patrol Crime Laboratory Division is to provide high quality forensic science services and training for Washington's criminal justice agencies that enhances public safety for the citizens of Washington. 
 
A Forensic Laboratory Intern provides opportunities for students to see the daily job responsibilities of a forensic scientist. It is an opportunity for the students to put their knowledge, skills, and abilities into practice doing research or validating methods or equipment. 

Duties include learning the daily tasks associated with forensic laboratories such as: Observation of scientific examination of evidence in routine and in non-routine casework Effectively convey ideas and information in writing and verbally, using language that is appropriate to both the complexity of the topic and the knowledge and understanding of the reader. Be able to stay focused over a prolonged period of time. Work effectively in a solo and team environment. Maintain confidentiality as it pertains to case submissions and the criminal justice process. Perform research and validation tasks as directed. Perform administrative tasks as directed.  Organize the personal workspace to minimize the likelihood of an accident or other unsafe incidents. Understand and demonstrate the principles of laboratory safety. Complete a high quality of work, by using accepted scientific methods in accordance with CLD Quality Operations manual and applicable technical procedures. Record and organize observations and data to create a record that explains analytical work and reports conclusions based on the interpretation of observations and analytical test results in a legible manner. Interpret and reach scientific conclusions, supported by their data and observations. Attend safety training as directed. Follow all relevant policies and procedures.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications Two years of educational experience in a natural science, forensic science, or closely related field, to include: 20 semester hours or 30 quarter hours of chemistry coursework 5 semester hours or 8 quarter hours of physics coursework.  At least 3 references  either as an attachment or included on your application. References cannot be relatives.  An attached essay detailing why you should be chosen for one of the Crime Laboratory internship positions.  Your essay should be no more than two typewritten pages, double-spaced in 12 point Times New Roman font with standard one-inch margins. An attached updated resume . Attached unofficial transcript (s) through the calendar year.

Polygraph & Background Investigation:

Prior to an internship being offered, a polygraph examination and background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.

Applicants are required to sign release of information forms and will not have access to any investigative materials, files, or results. The Washington State Patrol has strict guidelines relating, but not limited to, personal and employment characteristics, arrests, convictions, and illegal drug usage, etc.

During the polygraph examination, candidates are required to sign an assessment sheet and participate in an oral interview process to verify responses to the Personal Background Evaluation, the Personal History and Background Questionnaire, and a Pre-Employment Interview. Untruthful or misleading answers or omissions will be treated as a falsification which will be cause for rejection of potential employment.

The following information describes typical benefits available for full-time employees who are expected to work more than six months. Insurance Benefits

Employees and families are covered by medical (including vision), dental and basic life insurance. Staff are eligible to enroll each year in a medical flexible spending account which enables them to use tax-deferred dollars toward their health care expenses. Employees are also covered by basic life and long term disability insurance, with the option to purchase additional coverage amounts. Retirement and Deferred Compensation

State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs. For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems ' web site.

Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP). This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.

Vacation (Annual Leave)

You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165 .

All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.

Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Paid sick leave may be used for reasons included in WAC 357-31-130 .
