Job Description:
Mid-Level Forensic Examiner duties include all duties assigned to the Forensic Technician in addition to On-Site Backups (OSB), laboratory analysis, and database extraction duties, which may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Testifying in court, Grand Jury, or other legal proceedings through testimony, sworn
affidavits, or other legal instruments.
• Successfully passing competency and annual proficiency tests in Digital Forensics as
determined by SFL9.
• Maintaining operational effectiveness of all assigned Government hardware, software,
and forensic support equipment.
• Maintaining proper chain of custody of evidence and associated documentation.
• Performing other laboratory forensic functions as assigned.
On-Site Backups (OSB)
• Requires ability to travel with limited advance notice of 1-2 days. OSB travel typically
consists of 2 nights/3 days, with days 1 and 3 identified as travel days. The contracted
examiner must be able to adjust immediately to unexpected changes. OSB operations
normally take place during the workweek (i.e. Monday through Friday); however,
occasional weekend (i.e. Saturday and Sunday) work may be required.
• OSB operations frequently exceed a typical eight-hour day and it is required that the
contracted examiner remain onsite as long as is necessary to complete the operation.
• During an OSB, work schedules will adjust due to operational needs.
• Provide onsite digital forensics technical support for DEA operations.
• Identify and provide assistance and guidance for search and seizure of computer
systems, handheld devices, and digital storage media.
• Follow laboratory policies and procedures for OSB operations.
Laboratory Analysis and Database Extractions
• Interfacing with a case agent and developing analysis plan to address questions of
investigative relevance.
• Performing forensic analysis, to include, but not limited to:
o Recovering deleted files and other system artifacts.
o Decrypting password protected data files and devices.
o Performing forensic keyword searches and producing results.
o Analyzing and interpreting various data to provide technically accurate forensic
results and reports.
o Querying, extracting, and reporting data from relational databases found on suspect
media while maintaining data integrity.
o Recovering and restoring proprietary pharmaceutical databases, to include from flat
files or backups.
• Writing clear and concise technical reports and notes detailing work.
• Conducting research and development to identify evidentially significant artifacts from
emerging hardware and software technologies.
• Conducting research and development to identify new methods of forensic data
extraction and preservation.
• Conducting validation of tools and techniques.
• Providing guidance and training on emerging technology and new techniques to forensic
personnel as needed.
• Participating and representing the laboratory in professional organizations and working
groups as required.
Requirements:
US Citizen
Background investigation
BS Degree in Computers or Science field with 24 credit hours in computer science, engineering or math
Possess a laboratory-approved industry certification, currently EnCE, and pass a test
3 to 7 years digital forensic experience
