Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY:
The SQL Database Engineer generally specializes in SQL Server administration Tier II & III troubleshooting of Enterprise assets in a highly virtualized environment. The SQL Database Engineer manages SQL Server instances and databases on both physical and virtual servers, that are established as Stand- Alone instances, Failover Cluster Instances (FCI), and AlwaysOn Availability Groups (AG).

MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES:
1. Provides capacity planning and continued database maintenance and support following industry standard best practices. Monitors, tunes and analyzes database operations for all Production, Test and Development environments.
2. Uses available system performance monitoring counters, tools, and logs, as well as scripts such as T-SQL and PowerShell, to maintain and optimize SQL Server machines, instances, and databases.
3. Monitors and creates scheduled jobs for proactively monitoring the performance of all SQL Server servers and instances.
4. Administers SQL Server machines, instances and databases, and hardens them in accordance with Department of Defense Information Security Agency (DISA) Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIG).
5. Documents performance standards and work performed.
6. Provides necessary recommendations on potential system enhancements for, speed, security, scalability, integrity, and availability. Other additional duties may be assigned.
7. Ability to troubleshoot servers and infrastructure equipment
8. Ability to assess networking requirements and provide solutions
9. Ability to make accurate and independent decisions under pressure
10. Experience with a customer service oriented company
11. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
12. Ability to perform comfortably in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented work environment
13. Ability to successfully execute many complex tasks simultaneously

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
1. Candidate must be able to lift, push and pull up to 40 lbs.
2. The work environment will be 95% indoor and 5% outdoor. The outdoor work environment may exceed temperatures 100º F. Candidate must be able to withstand extreme heat physically.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience preferably in Computer Science or MIS, IS, Engineering or related field. One-year related experience can be substituted for one year of education if the degree is required. One year of related academic study above the high school level may be substituted for one year of experience up to a maximum of a 4-year Bachelors Degree in a Software Engineering or Business Information Systems discipline for three years general experience.

Experience: At least five years of practical experience working with various Microsoft SQL Server platforms, with a majority of experience working with SQL Server 2012 and higher. A solid understanding of virtualized, clustered, SQL server environments is preferred.Working knowledge of basic LAN network ports, protocols, and services, in relation to SQL Server machines, is required. Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills are required.

Certifications: This position requires DoD 8570.01-M IAT Level III certification and corresponding Computing Environment certification. Must have at least one of the following security certifications: CASP, CISA, GCIH, GSE, or CISSP. Also must be certified with the following CE (computing environment) certification: MCSE 2012/2014 Data Management and Analytics.
