Purpose and Activities:

Multilateral agencies, such as the World Health Organization and the World Bank, and other large organizations, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Welcome Trust, strongly influence the global health ecosystem in which pharmaceutical companies operate. Globally, regionally, and locally, these organizations help to expand access to and uptake of life-saving medicines and vaccines by shaping an enabling policy environment, funding health programs, and providing on-the-ground technical assistance and capacity building. Students in public health and public policy are invited to apply for a summer internship at Merck to gain first-hand experience in global public policy, strategic partnerships, and health system strengthening.

Outputs and Learnings:

Working under the direction of the AVP, Global Enterprise Policy and the Executive Director, Global Oncology Policy, summer interns will work with cross-functional teams charged with developing proposals for senior leadership to expand access and uptake of Merck's medicines and vaccines in low- and lower-middle income countries around the world.

Co-Ops will also have the opportunity to:
Support global health security activities, including a national commission co-chaired by a senior Merck executive, Support the development of strategic engagement plans for prioritized multilateral organizations, Develop policy strategies, position statements, and background materials on key issues affecting Merck's global operations. The assignees will gain experience and additional expertise in key professional and core public policy competencies, including: Public health, policy and product knowledge; Stakeholder analysis, engagement, and influencing; Messaging and program strategy development and execution; Working across boundaries, problem-solving, and strategic thinking and action.
Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a Master's or Bachelor's program in Public Health or Public Policy or any related degree. Required Experience and Skills:
Ability to work cross-functionally. Strong oral and written communication skills. College sophomore or higher level course work in public policy and/or public health.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
Knowledge of health systems desirable, including finance and payment structures, benefit design, care delivery, and understanding of the implications for supply and demand.
