Job Title: Waste Management Operator III - Public Works - Waste Management Bureau of Waste Collection - Minimum of the Pay Range

Pay Range: G.16, $33,862.40 - $50,252.80

Waste Management Operator III

Operates the rear loader as a driver/ground person, a knuckle-arm boom or automated vehicle to collect waste.

Safely operate the following collection vehicles to complete assigned work tasks:
?Safely operate a rear loader vehicle as either the driver or ground person; must be able to climb on and off rear loader repeatedly, quickly collect waste as part of a two or three-person crew. Must be able to navigate to make at least one pass on each street within the route.

Safely operate the knuckle-arm boom vehicle as a one or two-person crew; must be able to climb ladder, operate boom and stack bulky items to be collected. Must be able to sequence approximately 80 to 100 work orders, navigate to each and the safely service.

Safely operate automated waste collection vehicle; climb in and out of the vehicle as needed to move, stand up, relocate, or clean around the automated containers; must be able to climb in the body of automated vehicle to clean behind blade daily; must be able to safely collect approximately 1100 containers per day. Must be able to navigate to the route and to navigate two passes on each street within the route.

Perform daily inspection of equipment to detect present or potential maintenance problems.

Perform preventative maintenance as per manufacturer’s operations manual and Automotive Services policies.

Must be able to follow directions.


Advertised positions include a $1,500.00 sign-on bonus for newly hired employees. Bonus will be divided into three (3) $500.00 bonuses.

- First $500.00 bonus will be issued upon a successful background check.
- Second $500.00 bonus will be issued upon the six (6) month evaluation with an overall performance of “Meets Expectations”
- Third $500.00 bonus will be issued upon the one (1) year evaluation with an overall performance of “Meets Expectations”

OPEN UNTIL FILLED: This position will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. Once the appropriate applicant pool has been established, it will be closed. Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
High school or GED plus two (2) years’ experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, and associated with positions such as Waste management Operator; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Must possess a valid Virginia or North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee?s supervisor based on position assigned. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical.
This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. This position is physically demanding and involves manual loading material into the truck, as well as repetitively getting in and out the truck.
