The Virginia Beach Police Department is the largest municipal law enforcement agency in Virginia with more than 800 sworn officers serving over 460,000 citizens. The duration of the selection process averages six to nine months and applicants are encouraged to apply up to one year prior to an academy start date. At present, we conduct two academy classes/year, scheduled to begin in the spring and fall each year. On your first visit you will complete the written exam and physical ability test. On your second visit you will take a polygraph and meet your background investigator. On your final visit you will have an oral board interview, psychological exam, and a medical exam. The Virginia Beach Police Department is divided into 4 precincts and offers over 50 various job opportunities for sworn personnel to include: Uniform Patrol, SWAT, K-9, Motorcycle Unit, Marine Patrol, Aviation Unit, Bomb Squad, Mounted Patrol, Selective Enforcement, COP Unit, Ready Response Team, Project Lifesaver, Honor Guard, Crime Prevention Unit, School Resource Officer, Special Investigations, Criminal Intelligence, Computer Crimes Unit, Auto Theft Unit, Property Crimes Unit, Economic Crimes Unit, Domestic Violence Unit, Robbery Squad, Special Victims Unit, Homicide Unit, Pawn/Crime Analysis, Warrant/Fugitive Unit, Professional Standards, and Professional Development and Training.
You may apply at 20 years of age, but applicants must reach their 21st birthday by completion of the academy. Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen and have to be eligible to obtain a Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license. You do not need to be a resident of Virginia to apply for our police department.
The academy is 26 weeks long and is not a live in academy so recruits must have their own living arrangements. The next academy will start on June 6, 2019 and the typical hours are Monday through Friday 0700-1600 hours. The current police recruit salary is $42,723.20. Upon academy graduation you will receive a 5% increase to $44,886.40.
