Resources for Pursuing Federal Employment

Private or public sector? That is a question you may be considering as you transition to the civilian workplace. Your military experience makes you a good candidate for government positions as you are already familiar with the culture and operation of a federal job. If you are seeking government employment, you need to know how to find the public sector jobs and how to navigate the application process.

There are several federal resources available to help you find government jobs. Most federal agencies post their jobs to USAJOBS.gov. In addition, each federal agency has individuals responsible for promoting Veterans' recruitment, employment, training & development, and retention within their respective agency. These individuals can be found on the FedsHireVets website.

Many military and commercial resources can be used to locate government jobs. These resources and more federal job search advice can be found in the article Navigating the Federal Job Search Process.

Another important resource for finding government employment is your network of friends and colleagues who are working in the public sector. Remember the power of the informational interview to inquire about opportunities in the career you are targeting. Search for and join groups on LinkedIn for government jobs or federal employment to network with others in that sector.

Once you've found a government job you're interested in pursuing, it's important to understand the federal job announcements to be sure you are qualified for the job and to successfully apply for the position. Bruce Benedict, owner of Battlefield Resumes and a Certified Professional Resume Writer, shares a few easy steps in his article Conquering the Federal Employment Battle. Here he explains the process in three phases to help you decipher the federal system and prepare your application for results.

Using the many resources available to help in your federal job search will make the process less daunting and increase your chances of success.
